Selfie (2014) fan video by a Chinese fan, IINNeess on Bilibili
Eliza Dooley from Selfie and Demetri Noh from FlashForward (also played by John Cho)
(Machine translation) Title: Henry, if you don't work harder, it will be too late! 1. Eliza and Demetri saw each other at the elevator. 2. Demetri broke up with his girlfriend due to various issues and Eliza failed to pursue Henry. 3. The two disheartened individuals (Demetri and Eliza) met at a bar. While Eliza was singing, Demetri suddenly remembered seeing her before. He took the initiative to go on stage to sing and flirt with Eliza, and she also recalled seeing him before. 4. After their love-at-first-sight moment, Eliza hoped Demetri would ask her out again. Sure enough, he called her (and that was it!). Looking forward to new interpretations from everyone!

Lost pilot 1x01-1x02
So TV in the early 00's was in transition. It had all started in the 80's. With the advent of VCRs and hence recording, as well as the growing numbers of stations and cable TV, some creators were beginning to experiment. This began with nighttime soaps and series like Hill Street Blues, leading into the cultural phenomenon that was Twin Peaks. Slowly, but surely changing were the days when all stories had to be finished in an episode and episodes had to be watchable in any order. It became a genuine possibility that TV writers might begin to trust that viewers could follow a complex story throughout a season, or even (gasp!) multiple seasons. And with these new experimental TV show, grew the earliest internet fandoms, that followed with great obsession these stories and mysteries.
But also in the 90's, came the advent of inexpensive "trash" TV- talk shows like Jerry Springer, and also the early reality TV successes like the Real World and Survivor.
These powers would seem to be at odds, and those in the TV business didn't seem to quite know how to proceed. Sure, a series with a long running mystery or mythology like Twin Peaks or the X-Files could develop a very loyal fanbase, but how long could they REALLY stay loyal (Twin Peaks could be taken as a cautionary tale- it's season 2 ratings drop was legendary), and why should they invest in this when reality TV could be made so much cheaper?
So when Lost began in 2004, it was a gamble really. The cancellation rumors beginning even before the show did. Even the fans knew it was a risk, and a very expensive risk:
But a very well publicized one. Before the pilot even aired, there was buzz afoot. JJ Abrams had had a modest success with Alias, but he was not yet a household name. This was in the era when pilots often leaked in the summer before the fall premiere season, which, while technically considered TV piracy, did its work to spread buzz about new shows. Early things discussed before airing included the cinematic style of the series, it's enormous cast (an early article claimed it tried to "appeal to every possible demographic"- as I will note later, especially as we look back there is one very glaring omission), and especially the mysteries it set up.
Summary and discussion of early pre-series buzz begins in the TWOP Media Mentions thread Here
The pilot aired on ABC on September 22 2004, to an audience of more than 18 million viewers. Read TWoP's early reactions in the episode thread here
Even though the pilot actually aired over two weeks I'm actually going to cover both episodes this week for simplicity's sake. Please note that while these writeups are going to be episode to episode, they are NOT going to be spoiler-free.
Stray obversations:
*The first scene of the episode sets up a great number of things: the style (the eye opening!), the cinematic filming style and a number of character beats (Jack's chronic hero thing, Boone's ineffectual hero thing, Hurley's squeamishness, Claire's tendency to be a damsel). It works great as a hook.
*We all made fun of Shannon for standing still screaming, but lets be real, that would be most of us after being in a plane crash.
*The pilot also features the first appearance of what we would come to call the Smoke Monster, and theories began immediately. One of my favorites was that it was a dinosaur, since Lost was filmed in the same part of Hawaii that Jurassic Park was, but many people insisted that there had to be something rational and non-supernatural to explain things. This will turn into a recurring thread discussed here: people's lingering and occasionally stubborn refusal to acknowledge that Lost was science fiction in any way.
*a note and a small aside. The pilot introduces the technique that made Lost unique, and the real reason, aside from any discussions on merit, that the whole series would remain a television classic. It revolutionized the use of flashbacks (and later flashforwards) to tell the story and flesh out the characters. Here the early flashbacks just show how the plane crash happened and helps set up the plot and plant seeds of later stories, but their function would vary very soon.
*Fun note: when the pilot aired, a number of familiar faces in the cast were unknowns, with few exceptions. Matthew Fox had been on Party of Five and Terry O'Quinn was recognizable to moviegoers, but arguable the cast member with the most fangirls at the time was Dom Monighan, playing Charlie, who had in the past few years, gained fame as a Hobbit. To this day I can only tell Merry and Pippin apart by shutting my eyes and listening for which one sounds like he's going to burst into "you all everybody!"
*Finding the dying pilot and learning the flight was heavily off course splits the pilot, nearly separating the episodes.
*Here I point to a what if that will be controversial: one of the early plans for the show that fell through was that Jack was to be introduced as a hero, played by Michael Keaton (and advertised as his return to the small screen), and then die at the midpoint of the pilot. I honestly think that might have made for a better show. The series insistence on making Jack the plot's focal point dragged even when it was airing, and now is the bit that makes it scream "2000's" most strongly. The end show would have been very difference, especially without the dynamic between Jack and Locke, but I really think Kate, Locke and Sayid could have split up most of his role between them and both the show, and Kate's character, would have been so much better without that S****F*** love triangle.
*a small character observation: the pilot sets up Shannon's surface schtick of shallow, lazy and manipulative, but her discussion with Claire about her pregnancy made me note a character beat I never really noticed: Shannon has infinitely less manipulative and adversarial relationships with other women than with men, which given what we later learn about her relationship with her father and stepmother I finish very interesting.
*The second half of the pilot splits neatly into two separate goais: introducing the main parts of the large and international cast (Sawyer mainly didn't really have an introduction in the first hald of the episode), and introducing other bits of the ongoing mystery- Kate's past, the polar bear, and the French woman's broadcast.
*Even today, I find the end of episode 1x02 one of the series strongest. Rosseau's broadcast going on, the countdown, Sayid's calculation of how long it had been running for and Charlie's classic "Guys, where are we?", is chilling.
And now, onto the fandom. Lost became a media phenomenon and watercooler TV with a strong online fandom almost immediately. And unlike many others, its primary focus was not on the characters or shipping (at least not yet), but on theorizing, and that hasn't REALLY been duplicated since. Here is the early "speculation without spoilers" thread from TWoP, beginning before the pilot. Highlight from the pre pilot posting:
"Would cancelation speculation go here?
If it does get canceled, I'm guessing 6-8 episodes. I hope it stays, or at least gets a season...seems interesting."

making my way through Robert J. Sawyer's bibliography. it's something i've wanted to do ever since i read Flashforward in 2009 (after that cancelled ABC show, at the memory of which Funeral by Band of Horses immediately starts playing in my head), followed by Calculating God (still my favorite and probably objectively his best work). later i read more recent books, Quantum Night and The Oppenheimer Alternative, and circled back, but Mindscan was a bit of a disappointment
this time, i have read all of the WWW trilogy in as many days and started Triggers last night to finish it tonight - most of his books are real page turners
however, there's a reason only a couple of them are rated just above 4 stars on goodreads. his books are not a literary experience - i want to say they are a scientific experience, but i'm not a scientist and know fuck all about the stuff he covers in his writing. maybe a philosophical one? Sawyer is an ideas, concepts man. he is infinitely fascinated by the mind, the consciousness, the brain and how it works, evolution, biology, etc. a more practical reader will perhaps get frustrated at some point, a reader looking to savor prose will definitely get frustrated, but i, a dumbass infinitely fascinated by the idea of ideas, will devour every word - just like i will wrap myself in a beautifully written book with a meandering plot
so, Sawyer works for me. still, i keep thinking how great these books could be if all those cool ideas came with a good writing style and character work

why does this website sometimes act like streaming platforms invented cancelling a show after one season? broadcast networks have been cancelling shows after one season since the dawn of television. sometimes they'd pull shows from the schedule after six episodes. there are some who say they can still hear the geico cavemen screaming...

Gen comes from a very rich family, she’s never needed Jared’s money. It’s also not Jared who gets her all of her business connections but Charlie Capen who has been working with Gen for years.
Gen has her own career outside of Jared. I know a lot of tinhatters and wife antis like to paint her as a failed actress, but she was actually pretty successful before retiring to be home with her children. Not counting Supernatural, a role she got herself and didn’t force her husband to have written for her like Danneel did, Gen worked consistently up until she started having children. Which is how you can tell she actually retired because of her children, unlike Danneel who used motherhood to cover up the fact that no one wanted to hire her. She preformed in four theater productions, appeared in at least one movie per year from 2004-2007, was the lead in Wildfire which ran for 4 seasons (2005-2008) and had a small cult following, was a recurring character on abc’s Flashforward (2009, it only ran for one season, but it did win an Emmy), and her final project was being a lead in the movie Hated (2012) which won several awards at various film festivals. And while she might not be the strongest actress (I personally like her acting, something about it evokes 1960s, slightly campy starlet), she did care enough about her craft to go to school for acting (graduated from NYU Tisch School of Arts with a BA in English and a BFA in Drama). She did an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2020 about reprising Ruby for the final season, and she talked about preparing to to return by reading her old scripts from season 4, looking at her old acting notes and prepping with Jared before filming. She did more work to appear on one episode than Jensen did to create the prequel. And while her role on Walker was technically because of Jared, Anna Fricke was the one who proposed the idea and Gen was very open about how she got the role the moment it was announced she was cast. No pretending she got the role on her own merit like Danneel did with that whole Sister Jo/Anael travesty.
Instead of sitting around spending Jared’s money like tinhats want her to (I’m serious, I’ve had the misfortune of seeing a few posts and they’re all lamenting why can’t she just be a good beard like Danneel and just quietly spend her husbands money. Lot to unpack there) she wanted a little bit of independence and to contribute to the household. So she started blogging because it meant that she could still be at home with her children while working. Jared doesn’t pay for her ads or her magazine interviews because that’s not how business works. Charlie Capen helps manage Gen’s blog and gets her these ad deals, writers for Towwn and helps her with networking. She’s not coasting by on Jared’s name, she just working and shares Jared’s last name because they’re married. Has Jared promoted her? Of course, he’s her husband and wants to support her. He’s also promoted his sister’s books, yet no one labels his sister a leech. In fact Gen’s instagram didn’t even have her last name for the first few years, she changed it when the trend of usernames ended and most influencers just started going by their legal names.
Gen might have a nanny to help with the kids, but almost every mom would if they could afford it. Raising children really does take a village. And it’s clear that both Jared and Gen spend a ton of time with their children and as a family unit despite having a nanny or two. Unlike Danneel, who hasn’t shied away from how much she dumps her children on the nanny even during a pandemic and sent them to school prior to vaccines because they just couldn’t deal with them anymore. Imagine living in a huge mansion, your only job being a stay at home mom, having a nanny take care of your children most of the time, the resources to hire private tutors for your children so that they can stay safe and you don’t have to play school teacher, and still saying “hmm, I’m seeing too much of my children. Better send them off to school so that I don’t have to deal with them for the hour a day I pretend to be a hands on mother.”
The long and short of it is, Danneel wishes that she was half the woman that Gen is. Gen is her own person who happens to be married to a very famous man, a man that she loves and supports at every turn.
"The long and short of it is, Danneel wishes that she was half the woman that Gen is. Gen is her own person who happens to be married to a very famous man, a man that she loves and supports at every turn."
This post was a joy to read for me because it beautifully explained everything I would have wanted to communicate about Gen but couldn't really put into words. Thank you, Anon! 💕

Welcome!
Welcome to Lost in Fanfiction, a blog dedicated to, well fanfiction for the old ABC TV series Lost! The show aired from September 22nd, 2004 to May 23, 2010. It ran a total of six seasons, and 121 episodes. The show contains elements of supernatural and science fiction, and follows the survivors of a commercial jet airliner flying between Sydney and Los Angeles, after the plane crashes on a mysterious island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean. The story is told in a heavily serialized manner. Episodes typically feature a primary storyline set on the island, augmented by flashback or flashforward sequences which provide additional insight into the involved characters.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
FICS!
The current and main fic for this blog is LOST - Another Story. It’s rated M and you can expect swearing, canonical violence, and basically what you see on the show Lost. This fic follows an OC, Amelia Kassman who finds herself on Oceanic 815, despite being in the year 2010. The story will follow Amelia as she forms relationships with the Losties, and makes her own destiny as a new piece in the play. Amelia is an avid Lost fan and is armed with the knowledge of all that has happened in the series.
This fic is written with the idea that the readers have already watch Lost all the way though at least once. Also, the fic will be mainly Sawyer x OC with a few other ships along the way depending how things play out for Amelia.
DISCLAIMER: LOST - Another Story uses dialogue from the show Lost taken from Lostpedia’s transcripts. I do not claim ownership of any of the characters other than Amelia.
Masterlist!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHO I WRITE FOR!
I am willing to write for a few Lost characters, and I can always add more to this list as time goes on and I can get more comfortable with certain characters. Amelia will be the “pairing” mainly for writing, and I am perfectly okay with doing ‘x reader’ stories as well!
The current list is:
James “Sawyer” Ford
Benjamin Linus
This will expand eventually
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
DNI/BYF!
I cannot stop you from following me, nor will I purge my follow list of people I don’t like. I don’t wish to control anyone like that, and I want anyone and everyone to enjoy my writing. But here is a small list of what I don‘t want to see on my blog:
Please do not interact with the blog to discuss discourse of any kind.
Please do not send death threats, suicide threats, and/or anon hate just because you can
Pretty simple, right? This section may be expanded if more issues arise
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ASKS, REQUESTS, AND TAGGING!
Send me asks! I don‘t mind! Anon or not I am happy to hear from you no matter what it is. if you’d like to just vent I am here. I will reply and post asks I get, so please specify if you’d like me to post/reply in the ask.
Currently I am open to small drabble fic request. I will not write NSFW fics, though, out of my own self preservation. Although, I will be willing to write plenty of fluff. Currently I have no ships I will write for, although I do ask you to keep it to Lost only. I will happily write LGBTQ+ ships for those who request it, but I do not have any LGBTQ+ headcannons for any of the characters.
Please let me know if you’d like to be tagged for any of my fics. I will happily add you. Also, please specify if you’d like to be tagged in all fic posts, just the ongoing fic(s), or just requested fics.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A WONDERFUL DAY AND THANK YOU FOR CHECKING OUT MY BLOG!
